The UIN Malang Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences Student Team Wins a Gold Medal at the 1st Arau International Creativity Expo (ACE) 2023.

Students from the Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Medicine, UIN Malang (FKIK), have once again achieved a proud achievement in an international competition. This time, a team of students from various universities in Indonesia won a Gold Medal at the 1st Arau International Creativity Expo (ACE) 2023, organized by Universiti Malaysia Perlis, Putra Pauh Campus, Arau, Perlis, Malaysia. This competition provides an opportunity for young researchers from around the world to compete and present cutting-edge ideas in various fields, including medicine, biomedicine, healthcare, and cosmetics.

This team of three talented students won a Gold Medal in the "Medicine, Biomedical, Health Care, and Cosmetics" category. The team consisted of:

  1. Faza Saiqur Rahmah (Chairperson) – Medical Education Student, UIN Malang Class of 2020.
  2. Vira Marcella Winokan – Medical Student, Atmajaya Catholic University Class of 2020.
  3. Muhammad Abdillah Roikhan – Medical Student of Airlangga University Class of 2021.

They are part of the Leadership Representative Body (BAPIN) of the Indonesian Medical Student Senate Association (ISMKI) and met at the 2023 International Medical Scientific Summit (IMSS) in Aceh.

The research they presented in this competition relates to a product called “Daco Tea,” an herbal tea drink that has benefits for lowering blood sugar levels in patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. This innovative product utilizes natural ingredients such as purple corn silk and pandan leaves which are often considered waste or leftover substances.

Daco Tea contains antidiabetic compounds known to be present in these ingredients, such as flavonoids, tannins, alkaloids, polyphenols, and others. This product has undergone a careful drying and processing process and is packaged in biodegradable tea bags for practicality, durability, and waste reduction.

The first Arau International Creativity Expo (ACE) 2023, held over four days, provided a valuable opportunity for these teams to develop their potential in science, research, and innovation. They shared experiences with other participants, communicated with various international stakeholders, and faced new challenges, including communicating with local communities who lack English proficiency.

Team leader Faza Saiqur Rahmah expressed her happiness and gratitude for this achievement. She also hoped that this collaboration would continue to develop as a unique and positive example of cooperation between universities. The team plans to conduct more in-depth research and preparation with the assistance of relevant lecturers and experts, as well as develop the problem and urgency of their research to enhance their future work.

This student team's achievements demonstrate UIN Malang's immense talent and potential in research and innovation, and its ability to compete internationally. Hopefully, their success will inspire future generations of students to continue achieving and contributing to the development of science and technology.
